Anime Expo 2011 in 2D - Day 2 Highlights

If you showed your ticket at the Toyota booth outside Nokia Theater after the Miku no Polis (Vocaloid) concert, you got a free souvenir stadium seat cushion...

Anyway, my focus for day 2 of Anime Expo 2011 was the concert, so I really kept to a few activities (really odd for a Saturday, but not so much for a second day of AX...)

First step was to finally check out the Exhibit Hall to get some Vocaloid merchandise that will be described in my merch post to be written later...of course being a Saturday, there was a crowd waiting to get in when it opened...

Now my first choice of the day after getting a few things before the concert (a program, an uchiwa fan, a cell phone charm that can't be attached to my phone...too bad the Hello Kitty x Miku Hatsune plush was not for sale...) was which screening to catch...the premiere of the anime version of the live-action series Supernatural (seen on the CW...I was first introduced to the series when I was in Hawaii last year...still prefer Warehouse 13, though) or My Bride Is a Mermaid...I chose the latter and was happy with my decision.

After the screening, I went into another session of the AX Anime and Manga Studies Symposium...this time, the presentation was about AMVs and how AMV editors and professional film editors think...it got too technical for me so I checked out the twitter feeds when I saw a couple posts about South Hall being under lockdown...during the symposium presentation, there was an announcement over the PA system asking for someone to claim a box...turns out they were connected...good thing to know that unattended packages are taken seriously...

The second decision of the day was which gathering to catch, the Air Gear gathering that was a bit away from the Vocaloid gathering scheduled a half hour later, or the K-On gathering that was just steps away from where the Vocaloid cosplayers would be...Now I had a fun time at last year's gathering that included souvenirs and cake (I finally upgraded to Flickr Pro, so if you had problems seeing the pics from last year's gathering, you should be able to see them now...I'll be migrating/copying pics to other locations in the coming months so I don't have to worry about not being able to show pics)

Anyway, the possibility of cake outweighed my desire to see Simca or Ringo (I still dream of seeing Air Gear cosplayers skating around the Santa Monica Pier for a magazine photoshoot...)...

Of course, being the day of Miku Hatsune's North American debut, the Vocaloid cosplayers were out in full force...

After the Vocaloid gathering, I hung around for a Bunny Girl gathering that didn't materialize...Now by then, it was a few hours before the concert, so I wandered around for a bit and then had a late fancy seafood lunch at Rock 'n Fish at L.A. Live before I headed back to my car to change shirts since I was sweating through the shirt from the Saori Bajina (Oreimo) inspired cosplay/otaku outfit (got rid of the wig and wore regular sunglasses, but kept the bandana) and drop off my cameras since the theater doesn't allow photography inside...I was able to take a few pics before and after the concert with my cell phone though, like this Final Fantasy inspired cosplay as we were getting inside the theater...

And a pic with a cute Miku cosplayer who was probably hired by Toyota...

...Had a late dinner at YardHouse with new friends I made, and then called it a night since parking closes at midnight...

Here are the other pics I took that day...Enjoy!

Anime Expo 2011 in 2D - Day 1 Highlights

Finally, I can look at the pics I took with my dedicated 2D camera...I think the above picture captures two of my favorite things...cosplay and food trucks...I'm happy I was able to take this pic before the fans swarmed this Kogi truck (I myself had to get my Lomo Arigato fix, and later that weekend I tried curry from India Jones that was awesome).

Since it has been a while since I looked at these pics, I'm having to jog my memory....

Let's see...Stopped in Little Tokyo to get pound cake for breakfast before heading to the LACC to pick up my Miku no polis ticket...Because of the line, I had to miss the opening ceremonies.

I recall lunch at the food trucks gathered in front of the convention center. During my lunch, I saw a tour bus of Japanese tourists arrive...Apparently they were part of a tour group actually coming for AX. Only two of them were dressed up (in lolita outfits...didn't take a pic because I was busy enjoying my tallarin saltado from the Lomo Arigato truck...oh how I miss you since you left Orange County!)

I did check out the Sailor Moon gathering (look at previous post for 3D pics)...

Immediately after was the Tales Of... and Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt gatherings (see previous post for 3D pics)...good thing these three gatherings were within a 30 second walk of each other...

Afterwards, I caught the keynote for the first AX Anime and Manga Studies Symposium from Comparative Media Studies professor Ian Condry from MIT who previously wrote a book on the Japanese rap scene and is currently researching the anime fan scene...(I always felt that a nation is comprised of different societies, each one worth researching, and fandom is a society in itself...).

Afterwards, since I was in my Meito Anizawa cosplay, I was heading for the Haruhi/Lucky Star gathering...Unfortunately, it was scheduled at the same time as the premiere of the English version of the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, so few people showed up, but still fun was had by all...

Okay, I know there was a meet and greet at L.A. Live that didn't happen as scheduled, so I watched Project Blue Earth SOS before heading to the AX Forum Meet and Greet...definitely a fun time to meet other forum members I only read posts from...

I also quickly learned on day 1 that I should've charged my camera batteries for my 3D rig the night before, so I didn't take many pics...

I can't remember much of what happened after the forum meet & greet...I'm sure I had dinner...

Anyway, I did take a couple more pics outside of cosplay gatherings on day 1...I think I was tired after waiting in lines on Day 0 and early on Day 1...

Anime Expo 2011 in 3D - Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Finally, the last set of 3D pics are done...too bad all that pink was washed out in the red/cyan anaglyph process...but here are pics from the Madoka gathering on day 3...

Some more...

When there is a large amount of red in the source pictures, the resulting anaglyph doesn't turn out completely well as shown in the following pics...

And some more pics...

Now that I'm done with the 3D, I can finally properly look through the 2D pics on my now deceased Canon A590...

Anime Expo 2011-Another 2D Break-Single Pics from 3D Rig

Okay during the crossplay/genderbend gathering on the morning of Day 3, I completely destroyed the LCD on my primary camera (the Canon Powershot A590 IS)...I ended up using one of the cameras from the 3D rig to take more pics for the rest of Anime Expo...

What's great about the rig is that the firmware on the cameras do not appear to be altered when you install the SD card with the Canon Hack Development Kit software...this means that the cameras function as before when I swap out the CHDK cards with normal cards. However, this was going to be a temporary solution as the 3D rig cameras are old and cannot handle SD cards larger than 2GB while most of my cards are in the 4-8GB range...

So here are the single shots I was able to take towards the end of Anime Expo...

In case you were wondering, my breakfast on the last day of AX was at The Farm of Beverly Hills located at L.A. Live...

Anime Expo 2011 in 3D - K-On!

Here are some K-On! goodness from the gathering on day 2...like last year, there was tea and cake! Now if only more cosplay gatherings ran like that...

The cropping feature on the Stereomaker software needs work, so the picture sizes may look a little off...

Some more K-On!!...(wishing to see a Nodoka or Jun cosplay one day...)

I like how at the performance at the end, Ritsu was busy enjoying cake...

I'm more of a fan of Yui, but I think "Don't Say Lazy" Ritsu was my favorite cosplay at this year's gathering.

HEY! Dont know if you remember me, I was the guy talking to you during the Sailor Moon gathering. Well I stopped by to check out your page, the few pics you have up look awesome!! Hope you load more soon... take care and good luck!

Thanks! More are coming...

Got a question about me or my blog?

Video Break: Miku no Polis Concert at Anime Expo

I dunno why they didn't include highlights from Rin and Len's part or Luka's...

Anime Expo 2011 in 3D - Tales of... and Panty & Stocking

More 3D goodness from two more cosplay gatherings on day 1...

Tales Of...(Phantasia/Symphonia/Rebirth/a whole bunch of games)...

And two pics from the Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt gathering...I just gotta know why this is popular, though I guess Stocking is cute...
