Anime Expo 2014 - One Cosplay/Two Gatherings

As someone who works in the real world, I like to get the most bang out of everything I make.  So when I wanted to make my cosplay for this year, I wanted two gatherings that could use the same cosplay.

On day 3 of Anime Expo, I hosted two gatherings where the cosplay would fit nicely.

First up in the morning was the crossplay gathering, which I wanted to make strictly crossplay instead of crossplay/genderbend as it seemed that only guys crossplayed while girls genderbend, so I wanted to see if I was incorrect.  With a Hetalia gathering happening nearby, I have a feeling there would've been more girls crossplaying as guys in my gathering if both gatherings were held at different times.

If I knew about the crossplay 101 panel, I probably would've scheduled the gathering at a later time.  It didn't matter much in the end as the panel was cancelled.

The second gathering of the day was an IdolM@ster/Puchimas gathering which was held where the Touhou cosplayers have gathered.  Apparently, it was a little tricky to find, but we got a decent group.

The highlight of this gathering was that someone brought an Afu...I was thinking of making hand puppets as they appeared in season 2 of Puchimas.

Anime Expo 2014-Love Live! School Idol Project Gathering

A 9:00 pm cosplay gathering during AX?  Finally, someone got it right by scheduling something when it isn't so hot and crowded!  Unfortunately, the host was delayed by the Sword Art Online II premiere, so I had to relay his texts to the group that moved outside.

Anime Expo 2014: The 3D Pics

I guess this year's Anime Expo was a little different, not just because of the longer than usual wait for badges (came in at around 5pm and didn't get my badge until 10:30pm), or the lack of panels that caught my interest...just something seemed different.  I dunno if it's because I'm getting older, or I really just needed an escape from work more than focusing on planning my AX weekend.

Despite all the complaints found in the AX forums, Facebook, and elsewhere (I view this year as an anomaly because of the Sailor Moon reunion, so I was expecting a lot of first-time attendees), I had fun discovering new anime and seeing the new cosplay out there (I'll post my top 15 later).

Story of a day: 3D Rig v1.3

The evolution of my 3D rig continues with v1.3, which came about because of the issues I had with the previous versions:

v1.0:  Too bulky, can only do landscape 3D pictures.

v1.1:  Compact but cramped shutter control box, but reliable.  Can only do landscape 3D pictures.

v2.0:  Used only AA batteries for the shutter control box and cameras.  Heavy (7 AA batteries were needed), and can only do landscape 3D pictures.

Last year, I was trying to resolve the landscape-only issue and cramped shutter control box with v1.2.  I had some success with taking pictures, in both landscape and portrait mode, but the wiring for the mini shutter control box broke pretty easily.

Otakon Vegas 2014 in 10 Pics or Less

Okay, there are still a lot of stories I still have to post such as D23 Expo 2013 and London One Year After the Olympics, but those require a lot of story writing.  In the meantime, I can easily write about the first con I attended this year as I really didn't do much.

I decided to extend my Christmas vacation a little bit longer so I could attend the first Otakon Vegas, which was held at the Planet Hollywood Casino & Resort (where Britney Spears has just started her residency) on the weekend before the annual International Consumer Electronics Show (CES).  As expected, there wasn't much to keep me busy (especially when I learned that Las Vegas' sales tax is actually higher than Orange County's, discouraging me from buying stuff in the rather small exhibit hall).  And since there was no natural light coming into the convention area, 3D pics were not taken.

Anyway here's the rundown of my Otakon Vegas experience:

Day 0 (Jan 2):  Spent all day driving around town putting together pieces for my winter version of gender bend Ika Musume.  Arrived at Planet Hollywood in the evening in hopes of picking up my badge early.  Told that they were would be ready in about an hour as they were waiting for supplies.  Went downstairs to lose $30 at the slots and try the lobsicle (lobster tail on a stick) from Lobster ME at the Miracle Mile Shops:
